This month the
feature Sensei is Hanshi Bruce Juchnik who is the head of
Sei Kosho
Shorei Kai International . Hanshi Juchnik
refers to his art as Kosho Ryu Kempo, and continues the teachings of
Grandmaster James Mitose. He is the 22nd descendant and inheritor of Kosho
Ryu Kempo from Grandmaster Mitose. Here is a brief bio of one of the top
Kempo people in the martial arts.

It was through Grandmaster Allemany that Hanshi met another top Escrimador, Remy Presas. The story goes that in 1976 Grandmaster Allemany had Hanshi to his school to meet Professor Presas. Hanshi Juchnik was said to have asked Professor Presas if he "wanted to play". According to Hanshi Juchnik, he was 'taken to school' by Professor Presas and became one of his top Arnis students. Hanshi Juchnik traveled extensively with Professor Presas doing seminars all over the country. For those who may have a copy or have seen the video (VHS version) of Professor Remy Presas Arnis series done by Black belt magazine, Hanshi Juchnik is on the cover with Professor Presas. Today Hanshi still teaches Arnis and is considered one of the best practitioners around. In 1978 Hanshi Juchnik met Dr. James Mitose through one of his students, Geroge Santana. Santana was a prison guard at Folsom Prison where Mitose was serving his sentence. Hanshi Juchnik had mentioned that James Mitose was responsible for bringing Kempo from Japan to Hawaii and starting Kosho Shorei Kempo in Hawaii. Mitose still had several students there including some his six original Black belts. Santana told Hanshi that the same Mitose was at Folsom and took Hanshi to meet him there. It was here that Hanshi started to visit Dr. Mitsoe and learn the tenants of Kosho Ryu. Hanshi took others to visit Professor Mitose, including Grandmaster Eugene Sedeno and Grandmaster Rick Allemany. All were trying to help get Dr. Mitose's manuscript printed and get him released from prison. Professor James Mitose never left prison and passed away in 1981. However the time he spent with Hanshi Juchnik shaped much of his future. In 1980, Professor Mitose sent Hanshi Juchnik a letter giving him permission to teach Kosho Ryu and spread the art anyway that Hanshi felt best for the art. Grandmaster Sedeno and Allemany also got certification from Professor Mitose. From here Hanshi Juchnik has continues to spread the concepts, philosophies and tenants of Kosho Ryu to today. However, I believe Hanshi Juchnik's greatest contribution to the martial arts was his creation of the Martial Arts Collective Society (MACS). This society is for the preservation of the arts and the teachings of the great Masters before us. It is through this organization that people meet and study with the top Sensei, Shihan, Masters, Grandmasters, Soke, Sifu, Olohe, Sigung, Sijo of the world. The first of the organizations Gatherings was in 1981 featuring Hanshi Juchnik, Grandmaster Allemany, grandmaster Sedeno, Professor Sig Kufferath (Danzan Ryu), Sensei David Champ and Michael Sullivan a top calligrapher among others. The Gathering has continued to bring the top Instructors from all styles together along with students from all styles and arts to train in harmony for over 27 years. The last Gathering was held in Sacramento in September 2008. This years will be held in Sacramento again. For more on the Gathering and the Martial Arts Collective Society check out this link: http://www.collectivesociety.com/MACS/Home.html As you can see Hanshi Juchnik has devoted his life, and energies to the Martial Arts from the early dojo wars of the 60's and 70's to today. His devotion to Kosho Ryu and preserving all other arts, styles and Instructors is incomparable. Hanshi Juchnik is truly a legend in today's Martial Arts community.

Previous Sensei Spotlight Professor
Libert O'Sullivan started training in the early 1940's as a teenager under
Professor Henry Okazaki in Hawaii. By 1949 he attained his Black Belt under
Professor Okazaki. His certificate was signed by Professor Okazaki,
Professor Sig Kufferath who would take over for Professor Okazaki, Professor
Bing Fai Lau and Professor Wally Jay. There are very few if any, who had
their certificates signed by these legends of Danzan Ryu. Professor
O'Sullivan then went into the military, serving both in the Army and the
Navy on separate occasions. One of the jobs in the military was as a
Military Police officer and it was here where Professor took special notice
what worked for real and on the street and what was more dojo study.Upon leaving the military Professor went to College and after completing college returned to Hawaii. He continued his training under Professor Kufferath who had now taken over for Professor Okazaki. Professor Kufferath took Professor O'Sullivan under his wing and it wasn't too long before Professor was testing students. Professor Kufferath made the decision to move to the mainland and left Professor O'Sullivan in charge of the Danzan Ryu school in Honolulu. Professor kept this school running until the building was torn down. Professor opened another school at the St. Louis High School and taught from 1955 to 1966 in Hawaii as the senior Danzan Ryu Instructor. For the last 10 years or so Professor has been teaching the Lua students of Olohe Richard Paglilawan Danzan Ryu at the Kamehameha School in Hawaii. Professor continues to do seminars around the mainland and in Hawaii teaching the early teachings of Professor Okazaki and Professor Kufferath. Besides being a fabulous Instructor, he is a very congenial, fun loving Instructor. Professor is very laid back, very modest Sensei who stills wears his white belt when he teaches. A very sincere, wonderful man Professor O'Sullivan is a role model to us all. He lives in Kailua on the windward coast of Oahu, and is still actively teaching at a spry 78 years old. One of the most caring, sincere, and sharing people you will ever meet, he truly deserves to be the Spotlight Sensei.
