Welcome to the
Yume Dojo
Biography Page.
Through the years, there has been many influences who
have helped shaped the development and the maturation of the Sensei's of
Yume Dojo. These great Sensei represent the
ROOTS of Yume Dojo. Sadly, many of these
Sensei have passed on, but it is the goal of Yume Dojo
not their teachings die out. Yume Dojo is
dedicated to keeping alive and spreading the art or aspects of the arts that
these great men passed down. Here is a short biography of some of these
people who have been such big influences to Yume Dojo.

Kuniba,
Shogo Sensei
was a complete Martial Artist. As a young man, Kuniba
Sensei trained in Aikido, Judo and Kenjutsu. He also studied
Kobudo with famous Okinawan Tara Shinken and Shorin Ryu with
Nagamine, Shoshin. Kuniba, Shogo Sensei was too young to
takeover the Seishin Kan dojo when his father passed away. Good friend
Hayashi, Teruo Sensei took over the daily operations of the dojo while
the young Kuniba continued his training in other arts. Eventually
Kuniba Sensei took over the dojo and started adding elements of his
other training. The students did not want these outside influences in the
dojo, so Kuniba Sensei looked to the United States to spread his art.
He created Goshin Budo Jujutsu (Goshindo) which comprised elements of
his Judo, Aikido and Jujutsu training. He also taught
Kuniba Ha Shitoryu here in the states, but continued to teach
Motobu Ha Shitoryu in Japan. Kuniba Soke trained Soke John
Simmons and is our link to his art. Yume Dojo’s art of Torite
Jutsu evolves from Kuniba Ha Shitoryu and Goshin Budo
Jujutsu.

Hayashi,
Teruo Sensei studied Shitoryu Karate from Kuniba, Kosei Sensei, Mabuni Sensei and Motobu
Sensei. He also was a Black belt in Judo and studied Ryueryu
Okinawan Karate. Soke Hayashi also studied Matsubayashi Shorin Ryu with
O'Sensei Shoshin Nagamine. He received a menkyokaiden from Taira
Shinken and continued his study of Kobujutsu with under
Nakaima, Kenchu. He is the founder of Kenshin ryu Kobudo. Soke Haysahi ran the Seishin Kai dojo after the
passing of Kosei Kuniba Sensei. He left and created Hayshi Ha
Shitoryu, which is his own interpretation of Motobu Ha Shitoryu.
Soke is known for his dynamic Katas, and his interpretation of Kata, Bunkai,
and his strong Ippon Kumite and Kumite Waza. Yume Dojo’s Okinawan katas are mainly Hayashi Ha and Kuniba Ha Shitoryu.
The Ippons we practice are all from Soke. Hayashi. Soke trained
Soke John Simmons which is our link to his art.

Soke John Simmons
has studied the Martial
arts for over 40 years and has trained with some of the greatest Okinawan Masters. His first
Sensei was O’Sensei Robert Trias,
in the Art of Shuri
Ryu Karate. Soke then moved
on to Kuniba, Shogo Soke on 2
separate occasions. From Soke Kuniba, Soke
Simmons received Sai, an Tonfa and Iaido. He also trained with
Hayashi, Teruo Soke
in Kenshin Ryu Kobudo and Shitoryu Karate. Of the Kenshinryu Kobudo, Soke Simmons learned several bo kata, 2 Sai kata, 1
Tonfa kata,
as well as Shitoryu and Goshin Budo Jujutsu. Soke
Simmons also studied with Kise, Fusei Soke. Pictured here is
Soke Simmons with Grandmaster Kise in the 80's. Soke Simmons
learned a great deal of
his Kobudo
from Grandmaster
Kise,
From Soke Fusei Kise aside from studying Kenshin Kan Shorinryu, Soke Simmons also learned two kama kata, nitan bo, nunchaku, Tonfa,
jo, 2 Sai kata, eaku, and also
trained with noted Okinawan Shihan
Shiroma, Jiro.
Soke Simmons shared his art
with us and is responsible for teaching us
Shitoryu/Shuriryu Karate,
Torite Jutsu and
Goshin Budo
Jujutsu. Soke
also shared much Kobudo as well.

Professor Kimo Ferreira
was a student of Professor Walter Godin
in Kempo Karate.
Professor Kimo has trained with
many of the great Masters in Hawaii and is a great historian as well. He is
noted for his interpretation of Kempo,
which he calls Kempo Jutsu.
Professor Kimo travels to Japan
often with wife Kiko and is the sponsor for Motobu, Chosei Soke
of Motoburyu Kempo and Motoburyu Udonde in
this country.
Professor Kimo
is a great link between his Hawaiian Kempo Jutsu
and Motobu’s
Okinawan Kempo. Professor Kimo has been a great influence in not only the
techniques of Yume Dojo but has shared much history and culture of Hawaii as
well.

Grandmaster Eugene Sedeno
is a living legend in the Hawaiian Martial Arts. As a young man Professor
Sedeno trained with Professor Walter Godin in Kempo, a
combination of Professor Chow’s Kempo and Sijo Emperados Kajukembo.
Professor Godin trained under Professor Chow and Joe
Emperado, Sijo Adrian Emperado’s brother. Grandmaster trained
with many different people in Hawaii, Bother Abe Kamahoahoa,
Grandmaster Ralph Castro, and Grandmaster Rick Allemany. Grandmaster has trained in the arts of Kajukembo, Shaolin Kempo
and Okinawan Kobudo. Grandmaster Sedeno been a big help
to Yume Dojo
and shares much of the Hawaiian History with the dojo. He has also shared
techniques and presented us with Mountain Meets River.

Soke Moses Powell
was a student of Professor Florencio Vistacion
of Vee Arnis Jitsu. Professor Powell also trained in Aikido.
He is the creator of Sanuces Ryu Jujutsu, which is known for its
rolling breaks and combination locking. Professor Powell
adapted his training for the streets, which was necessary living in the
Bronx in New York. Professor placed heavy emphasis on striking
”stun em before you lock em” and other principles of “touch and go”
and “take something with you when you go”. Soke Powell
has been a major influence on the development of Shizenryu Jutsu.
The principles and concepts of Sanuces Ryu are heavily embedded in
the curriculum of Yume Dojo.

Professor Wally Jay
is probably the most senior Jujutsu practitioner in the United States.
He created Small Circle Jujutsu and is world renowned for his
Jujutsu and is a true pioneer in the Martial Arts. Professor Jay
studied with Professor Henry Okazaki (pictured here) and Judo
champ Pedro Gomez. Professor Jay is known especially for his
finger locks and chokes. We have had the great honor and
pleasure to have trained with him, and have had some one on one training with
him. Shizenryu has included the principles and concepts of Small
Circle Jujutsu as well as some techniques. Small Circle Jujutsu
principles are applied to all techniques within Shizenryu Jutsu
like fulcrum-lever-base and focus to the smallest joint.
Many versions of Shizenryu Jutsu techniques resemble Small
Circle Jujutsu.

Professor Libert O' Sullivan
was a student of Professor Bing Fai Lau and Professor Sig Kufferath.
He also served in the military police at Fort Riley Kansas. Professor was very gracious
and spent an entire day sharing the art of Danzan Ryu Jujutsu. Professor made a copy of the Danzan Ryu curriculum and shared this with the Sensei's. He explained much about
"how" curriculum was taught and showed many techniques and explained how to
make them effective for use as a Police official. Professor O'Sullivan
was instrumental in having the Sensei's of Yume Dojo re-evaluate and
make Shizenryu Jutsu more street applicable and make technique more
efficient. He also was the influence for the Counter techniques in
the Shizenryu curriculum. We owe Professor O'Sullivan a major
Mahalo (thank you).

'Brother' Abe Kamahoahoa
was a giant of a man, and had a bigger heart. But on the mat, was a
powerful individual who loved his training. 'Brother Abe' trained a
lot of students in Hawaii, and is not very well known outside of Hawaii. He
trained with Professor Henry Okazaki of Dazan Ryu Jujutsu,
Professor William Chow and eventually with Sijo Andriano Emperado
of Kajukembo. He also studied Lua as well. This is one reason
we are including him in our lineage. He is linked to Yume Dojo by
Grandmaster Eugene Sedeno, Olohe Solomon Kaihewalu, and by association
Professor Kimo Fereirra. 'Brother Abe' trained Grandmaster
Sedeno early on in training. He also trained with him later on in his
life as well. 'Brother Abe' also trained Professor Walter Godin,
who in turn trained Grandmaster Sedeno and Professor Ferierra.
Olohe Kaihewalu also spent time with 'Brother Abe' as both
studied the art of Hawaiian Lua, and 'Brother Abe' shared his
knowledge of Lua with Olohe. We have no direct link to
'Brother Abe' but wanted to acknowledge his contributions to the arts he
studied and the people he influenced.
|
Professor Walter Godin is
another of the early practitioners in Hawaii. Professor Godin trained
Grandmaster Eugene Sedeno and Professor Kimo Ferierria which
is his link to Yume Dojo. Yume Dojo employs many techniques
shared by Professor Godin. Professor had some great
Instructors. One, was Professor Joe Emperado, Sijo Emperados
brother of Kajukenbo. Professor Godin trained with Joe
Emperado until his untimely death. He then continued training with Sijo
Emperado and also trained with Professor William Chow.
Professor Godin was one of Professor Chows top students and a
great Kenpo practioner. Grandmaster Sedeno and Professor 'Kimo"
have shared many of the "old school techniques" of Professor Godin
and it is this link that we have to him. Yume Dojo wanted to show
respect to the man who trained two influences to the art of Shizenryu
Jutsu.

Bugena
Awatea Edwin lives in South Canterbury New Zealand and has been a big
influence in understanding native arts. Bugena Edwin belongs to
several Maori tribes. He is a direct descendant of Maori Warriors, and his
Warrior name is Rua-ruruku. Aside from learning his family(whanau)art
of Ue-Kaha No Roto , Bugena Edwin is also a Sifu in Wing
Chun Kuen Kung Fu and other arts of China and Southeast Asia. His focus
is mainly now to share his family art and share the native arts of New
Zealand. Bugena has shared many insights into his art and other
native arts such as Lua. He has shared how culture plays a big role in
native arts, and has explained different levels of understanding and
training. Bugena has been a big influence in understanding our roots. 'Brother Awatea' has been a major influence into the
study of culture and the Martial Arts. Beside his help he has been a great
friend and 'Brother' and a member of the Yume Dojo Inner Circle |
Hanshi Bruce Juchnik
started his training in the
Tracy Kempo
system.
Hanshi
trained in many arts and
one in particular is Arnis. Hanshi Juchnik trained in Arnis
with well renown Escrimador Remy Presas. Hanshi was the first American to train in Arnis. Hanshi also befriended Dr. James
Mitose and began to study with him for several years, before Dr.
Mitose passed away. Dr. Mitose made Hanshi Juchnik the
inheritor of Kosho Ryu Kempo. We met Hanshi Juchnik over 7
years ago when he first introduced Kosho Ryu Kempo to us. Hanshi Juchnik
is the founder of the Kosho Shorei Kai and The Martial Arts
Collective Society (MACS). The Collective Society brings together
Sensei’s from all over the world to share their arts. It is the
purpose of the Society to bring together different arts, to preserve the
arts, and bring together students of all styles in the name of martial
brotherhood.

Shihan
Larry Kraxberger or "Uncle Larry" as he likes to be called, is a top
practioner of Kosho Ryu Kempo in this country. He is a direct
student of Hanshi Bruce Juchnik and is one of Hanshi's most
senior students. Shihan also studied Kempo in the Tracey system
before meeting Hanshi Juchnik. "Uncle Larry has been a major
influence to Yume Dojo where he has taken Principles of Kosho Ryu
and has helped adapted these Principles to Jujutsu. Shihan
Kraxberger has opened our eyes and changed our perspective of how to
apply our Jujutsu and understand how to employ Kosho Ryu Kempo
to Shizenryu |
